Rocky gets its very own South Bank playground

Soon families will no longer need to travel to Brisbane’s iconic Riverside Green playground at South Bank once an almost identical version is built on Rockhampton’s revitalised riverbank.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the state-of-the-art playground will soon go out to tender after Council gave the final designs the tick of approval last week.

“We are very excited to be bringing what we believe is going to be North Queensland’s best playground to the families of our Region,” Mayor Strelow said.“We’ve had so many people talk to us about the South Bank playground and how amazing it is, and now we will deliver something as equally spectacular.”

Mayor Strelow said that the most important design element for a playground in Rockhampton’s tropical climate was heard loud and clear.

“We are confident that families are going to love the playground all year round with a mix of natural shade and plenty of shade sails to keep everyone covered,” she said.

“The playground will also be built on a raised platform, so that in most circumstances it is above flood level, but should the need occur, it can be completely removed.”

The playground is part of Stage Two of the Riverfront Redevelopment.

Description:

• Sitting at six to eight metres high above the ground, a giant skywalk will be the focal point of the playground where kids and adults can safely move between the towers via bridges.
• A climbing net will act as the entry point to the sky walk from which kids can then exit through jumbo enclosed slides and land on a soft fall ground.
• Under the shade sails below the sky walk, smaller slides and climbing structures including rock climbing walls and nets will keep the younger kids entertained.

• A dedicated play area for toddlers will also be situated off the side and will feature a small fort structure with a smaller slide and climbing objects.
