The Rockhampton region has been named a finalist in Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s (QTIC) Top Tourism Town Awards.

The awards program recognises Queensland towns that offer an amazing visitor experience, who demonstrate a strong commitment to and encourage tourism in the region, and where tourism operators, local businesses and the local community work together to make their town the best destination it can be.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said being named as a finalist in the awards marks the Rockhampton region as one of Queensland’s top holiday destinations.

“Being named as a finalist in the Top Tourism Town Awards places Rockhampton amongst some of Queensland’s best tourism destinations, including South-East Queensland’s Noosa and Bowen in the Whitsundays,” Mayor Williams said.

“The recognition proves our region offers a unique holiday experience – where else in Queensland can you catch metre-long barra, stroll along Australia’s longest National Trust heritage-listed street, wander through treetop boardwalks, ride mountain bike trails and visit a free zoo with over 60 native and exotic animals including our new meerkat enclosure.”

Advance Rockhampton Executive Manager Greg Bowden said the award recognition will help to push Rockhampton’s tourism profile as the State enters an economic recovery phase post COVID-19.

“As we start to see Queensland move on from COVID-19 and continue to see the regions rising, this award recognition will put Rocky on the radar as an alternative holiday destination,” Mr Bowden said.

“Being named a Top Tourism Town award finalist builds on the great work the Advance Rockhampton team are doing in driving tourist visitation, and we hope to see the recognition extend to an increase in visitor numbers over the coming months.”

Advance Rockhampton Manager of Tourism and Events Annette Pearce said Advance Rockhampton’s tourism team had launched their latest promotional video as part of the award nomination.

“Our latest promotional video showcases the Rockhampton region through the eyes of locals, encouraging visitors to open their eyes to Rockhampton,” Ms Pearce said.

“No matter what your age, whatever the occasion, fireside or five star, Rockhampton offers a viable tourism product that suits all target markets.

“Our latest video encourages Queenslanders to come and explore Rockhampton and all that we have to offer, and is a valuable way of promoting our region.”

QTIC’s awards program is part of the Australian Tourism Awards series and State winners will have the opportunity to represent Queensland at the National Awards.

The award program has now entered a voting period where the public is encouraged to watch a promotional video and vote for the town that most inspires them.
