The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) remains in the Lean Forward phase following the Bureau of Meteorology’s current moderate flood warning for the Fitzroy River.

As upstream floodwaters move south, the Fitzroy River is expected to rise steadily into the weekend and early next week.

LDMG Chair and Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the Lean Forward phase reflects a heightened state of readiness ahead of possible flooding.

“For residents in Yaamba, minor flooding is already occurring from local runoff, and moderate flooding is possible from as early as Saturday evening,” Mayor Williams said.

“In Rockhampton, the Fitzroy River is rising, and moderate flooding is possible from as early as next Monday as Mackenzie River flows arrive.

“We will continue to refine our predictions and forecasts as upstream peaks move through the system.”

Heavy rainfall across the Connors, Isaac, Mackenzie and Theresa Creek catchments since Sunday has contributed to rapid river rises and the current flood situation.

While showers and thunderstorms are forecast in parts of the catchment, they are not expected to significantly influence Fitzroy River levels at this stage.

Mayor Williams said residents can begin making sensible preparations now, without panic.

“This is the time to stay informed, review your household emergency plans, and consider practical steps such as checking your property, moving items from low‑lying areas, and considering sandbags if needed,” Mayor said.

“These are precautionary measures to ensure you’re ready, should those measure be necessary.”

Sand piles are available from today at three locations across Rockhampton and residents are encouraged to bring their own bags and shovels:

  • Stapleton Park car park, Bridge Street, Berserker
  • Mcleod Park, Dean Street, Berserker
  • Gate 8, Rockhampton Showgrounds, corner of Lion Creek Road and New Exhibition Road, Wandal

Council expects a delivery of sandbags from tomorrow and crews will be replenishing sand piles as needed over the coming days.

Council continues to monitor conditions closely and will provide further updates as new information becomes available.
