The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved to ‘alert’ stage, in response to the severe weather system associated with ex‑Tropical Cyclone Koji.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Tony Williams, said the LDMG is closely monitoring the system and river catchments in Rockhampton and surrounds.

“Entering the Alert phase marks the beginning of our activation process and indicates a heightened state of awareness,” Mayor Williams said.

“Heavy to intense rainfall is expected to continue over the region today and into tomorrow but is expected to ease from then.

“The combination of heavy rainfall and high tides have caused the Fitzroy River levels to rise.

“At this stage, we don’t anticipate any major impacts; however, the Derby Street car park may need to close as a precaution from Tuesday.

“We will advise the community later today if this closure is required, ensuring motorists have time to make alternative arrangements.”

Mayor Williams said any further impacts to the Fitzroy River would not be seen until later in the week as additional flows from upstream catchments move south.

“Heavy rainfall across the catchment and additional flows from northern river systems over the coming days may lead to rising levels in the Fitzroy River, creating the potential for some flooding later in the week,” Mayor Williams said.

“We are fortunate that the Fitzroy system provides us with several days of lead‑time, allowing us to monitor the catchments and prepare well in advance.

“At this early stage, we are continuing to monitor conditions, but it is too soon to make accurate flooding predictions.

“We have time to prepare for any outcome if needed, and we will keep the community informed as the situation develops.”
