The below was issued by Acting Premier and Minister for Trade, The Honourable Dr Steven Miles
The upgrades to the Rockhampton Airport Terminal, including a new mezzanine floor and passenger lounges are on track for completion, thanks to $6.44 million from the Palaszczuk Government’s $200 million COVID Works for Queensland program.
Acting Premier and Minister for Local Government Steven Miles inspected the construction site with Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke, Assistant Minister for Education and Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga and Rockhampton Regional Council Acting Mayor Neil Fisher.
“The new passenger lounges and mezzanine floor are looking fantastic and the terminal will be a tremendous first impression for visitors to this beautiful region,” Mr Miles said.
“The upgrade has supporting more than 50 local jobs, helping the Rockhampton community to unite and recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Mr O’Rourke said COVID Works for Queensland funding was integral to the terminal upgrade.
“This is the type of project that COVID Works for Queensland was designed to help councils deliver for their communities,” Mr O’Rourke said.
“It builds on the $27.2 million the Rockhampton Regional Council has received from the Queensland Government’s $600 million Works for Queensland program which has seen more than 800 jobs created or supported in Rockhampton, helping deliver 38 projects for the region.”
Ms Lauga said the upgraded terminal will improve liveability.
“This will provide a major boost for tourism in our community,” Ms Lauga said.
“COVID Works for Queensland is benefiting communities right across the state. Councils estimate it will create or support more than 4,600 jobs.”
Acting Mayor Fisher thanked the Queensland Government for its support.
“This terminal upgrade will have significant benefits as our tourism sector grows, providing visitors with an impressive gateway to all that the region has to offer,”
“It will also ensure a warm welcome home for locals who have travelled.
“These works are a wonderful example of what can be achieved when our two levels of government work together for the community.”
