Backwater Valve Inspection

With Tropical Cyclone Owen reforming in Far North Queensland this morning and predicted to track back inland, Rockhampton Regional Council is urging residents to get ready now for any rain which may come from the system.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams, said now was the perfect time to start getting prepared.

“Council is doing its bit to make sure our prevention and mitigation measures are tested and ready to be deployed, with crews checking backflow prevention valves, stormwater drains and our sewage network in the lead up to this year’s wet season.

“Fitzroy River Water has also completed the annual inspection of Mount Morgan No. 7 dam, and has reviewed the North Rockhampton Flood Mitigation Area and other related flood preparation and response actions to ensure they are current.

“We can only do so much though, and that’s why it’s critical all of our region’s residents do their own preparations – clean up your yards, make sure your gutters are clear and take the time to ensure your property is ready.

“One of the best things residents can do is have a look at the drains on the kerbs and, if they notice a bit of debris or leaves in there, to remove it now before the rain comes.

“Council will continue to keep an eye on the system and, in the meantime, residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Emergency Dashboard on Council’s website which will have all the latest information during an event along with our Facebook Page,” Cr Williams said.

The Emergency Dashboard can be viewed here.
