Please note: Community Tree Plantings have been postponed due to recent rain - we'll be announcing new dates shortly.

Registrations are now open for our National Tree Day planting on Sunday 31 July, so sign up today to pitch in and grow a greener future at Yeppen Lagoon.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said our local action contributes to the event’s aim to reach 1 million native plantings across Australia to mark National Tree Day.

“National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree planting and nature protection event, and it’s a very rewarding experience and one that our local community look forward to every year,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Council is proud to participate in National Tree Day and the positive effects of tree planting efforts are being enjoyed by our community across our parks and open spaces.

“This year we’re going to concentrate our efforts on Yeppen Lagoon.

“I think the energy of everyone turning out to this single site and working side by side is going to be incredible.

“This site is also a great example of being able to see the progress of previous planting activities and the positive legacy volunteers are helping to create.”

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said there are many benefits to National Tree Day.

“National Tree Day first started in 1996, and over the years since then it serves as a positive reminder about the importance of protecting, maintaining and enhancing our natural environment,” Cr Kirkland said.

“National Tree Day is an opportunity to get out and help improve the habitat of our local wildlife, whilst also cooling and shading our unique natural areas for the benefit of our Region for years to come.

“It’s also a great day for everyone who turns out. There’s a lot of benefit in knowing you’re doing something tangible to give back to your community.

“We expect to see an excellent turn-out this year and as well as planting a tree, participants can also learn more from range of nature based activities set up on the day.

“Everyone who pitches in will receive a $5 beverage voucher they can use at the Botanic Gardens Tearooms on the day.”

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson said he can’t wait to see the impact this year’s planting will have.

“I know a lot of people love walking along this area, but in summer it can get very hot,” Cr Wickerson said.

“A bit of shade here is going to make a huge difference, and everyone who pitches in will be able to enjoy the difference they’ve made as these trees grow over time.

“So register now to come along and get involved. There are three community planting sessions scheduled for Yeppen Lagoon and we look forward to seeing you there.”
