Get ready for red!

Rockhampton Region residents with dark green general waste bin lids will soon see their lids retrofitted for red, as Council kicks off a Bin Lid Harmonisation Program this month.

Thanks to funding received under the Queensland Government’s Recycling and Jobs Fund, any household general waste bins that still have a dark green lid will be changed to red, bringing all local waste collection wheelie bins in line with national standards.

Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said this State Government funded initiative will create consistency across kerbside waste collection services, making sorting easier for everyone.

“Standardising bin lid colours is about making it easier to identify the correct bin to use, whether you are at home, out and about or even if you’re on holidays,” Cr Latcham said.

“Although Council has been replacing general waste bins with red lids as part of operational bin maintenance for quite some time, the Bin Lid Harmonisation Program allows us to bring all remaining dark green bin lids into line.

“This change might seem small, but it will have a big impact in helping to ensure our kerbside collection services are consistent with best practices across Australia.”

The bin lid changeover will begin on Monday 14 July and run for approximately 4 weeks, progressively moving through kerbside collection areas throughout the Rockhampton Region.

“During the program period, we’re asking households with dark green lids on their general waste bin to leave their bins out from 6am to 6pm on their usual collection day to allow enough time for the changeover,” Cr Latcham said.

“It’s important to note that only the bin lid is being replaced, not the entire bin, and if you already have a red lid on your general waste bin, no action is needed from you.

“Dark green lids removed from general waste bins will be returned to Council’s bin manufacturer, melted down and repurposed to produce new bins.”
