Women around Australia are gearing up to hit the Fitzroy River on September 2 for the annual two-day Women That Fish Barra Classic event.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council is proud to support the tournament through a $10,000 Community Assistance Program grant.

“The Community Assistance Program is about supporting local groups, events, and initiatives which benefit our community, and this event does just that,” Cr Wickerson said.

“This tournament is one that many look forward to, and it's so exciting to see it continue to grow each year.

“It’s fantastic that the tournament returns to the Fitzroy River (Tunuba). Not only do the competitors get the chance to hook a barra but they can also experience and explore our beautiful region."

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said tournaments like this one promote our region as a premier fishing destination.

“Rockhampton may be the beef capital, but it's also home to the barramundi,” Mayor Williams said.

"We’re one of the few places in Australia where you can land at the airport, check in to your hotel and be on the water in less than an hour.

“Supporting events like this is an important part of our Recreational Fishing Development Strategy, and it’s a great way to show others what our region has to offer.”

Parks Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said this tournament contributes to the sport of fishing, bringing women from around Australia to the Rocky region to fish.

"This event is great because it encourages more and more women to become involved in the sport," Cr Rutherford said.

“Whether you are an amateur or have caught an award-winning barra, fishing is something everyone can enjoy, and I encourage you to get involved."

Event co-organiser Shara Vanhaeren said she is excited about another massive event and is keen to welcome competitors and skippers from all areas to the mighty Fitzroy River.

“The Women that Fish Barra Classic is a fundamental tournament that continues to grow each year thanks to the continual support of incredible sponsors, competitors and committee members," Ms Vanhaeren said.

"The classic is a wonderful opportunity for making friends, building confidence and of course, catching an award-winning barra.

“Our aim is for the Barra Classic to become not only the first but the most prestigious 18 years and over, Barramundi Lure competition along the entire east coast of Australia.

“My co-founder and co-organiser Kalana Thomas and I have been working tirelessly to make sure our event is a success.

“The growth of the competition has seen a substantial increase in female anglers and teams since the humble beginning – the whole committee is overwhelmed and excited by this growth.

“With over $35,000 worth of giveaways and prizes, including the Grand Prize Giveaway, a 3.1m Aluminium Vessel with motor, this year is shaping up nicely.

“While the competition itself is only for women over 18, men can certainly get involved on the day. Skippers can do everything but cast and retrieve a rod.

“Registrations for 2022 are closed but nominations for the 2023 event will open in March.”
