How a single print led to a solo exhibition

Favourable public response to one photograph in an exhibition at Rockhampton Art Gallery in 2019 has lead to a solo exhibition by photographer Joachim Froese at Rockhampton Museum of Art from August.
Joachim Froese’s photograph Rhopography #44, a silver gelatin print, was one of 108 photographs donated to Rockhampton Art Gallery in 2019 by the Queensland Centre for Photography after it closed.
Rhopography #44, along with works by other photographers, featured in an exhibition at Rockhampton Art Gallery shortly after the collection was donated.
Rhopography #44 is part of a series of still life photographs, using traditional analogue photographic processes.
Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said that the piece captured the public’s imagination when first displayed.
“Froese’s work Rhopography #44, a silver gelatin print, proved very popular with gallery visitors when it was first displayed at Rockhampton Art Gallery in 2019-2020,” Cr Wickerson said
“This prompted Rockhampton Museum of Art to engage with the artist to work toward a solo exhibition,” he said.
Froese’s work often deals with the role of photography in shaping the known world.
His exhibition at Rockhampton Museum of Art, Joachim Froese: Echoes of Process, features several key series that raise environmental concerns, amongst them Entangled, his recent series of salt prints that depict close-ups of seedlings he grows in his garden, and a new photographic installation that re-interprets panorama visions taken by NASA’s Mars rovers.
Joachim Froese: Echoes of Process will be on display at Rockhampton Museum of Art from 20 August to 16 October.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Raised in Germany and based in Brisbane and Berlin, Joachim Froese has been a practicing artist and educator for over three decades. He holds a PhD from RMIT University, Melbourne, and has lectured in photography at the Queensland College of Art and other tertiary institutions in Australia and Germany. His works are held by the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, and several regional Queensland galleries. Froese is an Honorary Lecturer at the School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland.
