Today Rockhampton Regional Council extended the public consultation period for the proposed Major Amendment to the Rockhampton Region Planning Scheme until Friday, 14 June 2019.

Chair of Council’s Planning Committee Councillor Ellen Smith said the extension is to ensure that every Rockhampton resident who wants to make a submission has enough time to do so.

“The Major Amendment to the Planning Scheme was opened to public consultation on Monday 15 April, with an original closing date of Friday, 17 May,” said Cr Smith.

“However, a number of residents have expressed their concern that they have not had sufficient time to respond.

“Community consultation is an absolutely essential part of the process of amending the Planning Scheme, so we have made the decision to extend the public consultation period to ensure that anyone who wants to make a submission is able to.

“There are a number of changes incorporated in this proposed amendment, including the introduction of the Fitzroy River Accommodation and Fitzroy River Industry precincts to promote growth in the fishing industry, and a Character overlay designed to protect significant commercial and residential buildings.

“It is incredibly important to Council that everyone in our community has the opportunity to read these proposed changes, reflect on what these changes may mean, and submit their thoughts.

“The Planning Scheme is designed to reflect our community and meet the needs of the people who live here.

“The more submissions we receive on the proposed changes the more we are able to fully understand people’s concerns and opinions, and, ultimately, the better our Planning Scheme will be.

“So, if you have not had a chance to make a submission yet, please do consider making one.”
