Rockhampton Regional Council is proposing to bring in new protections for historic buildings in Rockhampton’s CBD, as part of a Major Amendment to the region’s Planning Scheme.

Chair of Planning Committee, Councillor Ellen Smith, said the proposal was all about preserving the historical character of the CBD for generations to come.

“We are incredibly lucky in Rockhampton to have some beautiful heritage buildings which are loved by locals and tourists alike.

“A wander through the streets of our CBD reminds us of how this city and region grew from 1855 to become what it is today.

“Some of those buildings – particularly along Quay Street - are protected by the Queensland State Heritage Register. However, many others are not.

“We believe it’s very important to ensure those buildings and the character of the area isn’t lost through demolition or inappropriate modifications, and that the style of the existing streetscape is maintained.

“That’s why we want to introduce something called a Character Overlay Area which protects the architectural heritage of the area.

“This would be introduced as part of the Major Amendment to our Planning Scheme which is currently out for public consultation.

“Community consultation is an essential part of the process of amending the Planning Scheme. We want to hear what individuals, community groups, business, and developers in our region have to say about these changes.

“Every submission will be considered by Council, every submission will receive a formal response, and the scheme may be altered to reflect your suggestions.

“Ultimately, the Planning Scheme is for the people who live here, and it is designed to meet your needs.”
