Rockhampton Regional Council is hopeful that many pedals will be powering on new cycle ways as part of the Council’s push to grow the Region’s cycle network.
This week Council endorsed two new cycling projects seeking 50% funding from the State Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.
Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Infrastructure Committee Cr Tony Williams, who is a passionate promoter of pedal power, said that Council will put forward a further North Street upgrade of on-road cycle facilities from Victoria Parade to Campbell Street and also a Canning Street upgrade of on-road cycle facilities from Derby Street to Cambridge Street at a total cost of $659,000.
“Hopefully the State Government will get the funding wheels in motion and agree to provide 50% of the total costs for these projects,” Cr Williams said.
“Council’s focus on expanding cycle ways comes from the CQ Principal Cycle Network - prioritised urban cycle routes and on-going discussions with the cycling reference group.
“If Council is successful in obtaining the two additional projects it will mean that there will be five urban cycleway projects and numerous mountain bike trails at the First Turkey Mountain Bike Reserve that Council is either designing or constructing for delivery to the cycling community in 2017.
“Council has had a good track record in obtaining funding through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program with $462,300 secured through the previous round for cycle way projects on Moores Creek Road, Norman Road and at Kerrigan Street.
“Council is committed to the cycling community with meetings scheduled twice a year with the cycling reference group to discuss and plan on strategies to increase the local cycle network.”
