Rockhampton Regional Council is promoting responsible pet ownership by contributing $5,000 to RSPCA’s Operation Wanted.
Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said the annual campaign offers pet owners the opportunity to desex their pets for a discounted rate.
“Operation Wanted is a nation-wide desexing campaign that brings together local councils, participating veterinary clinics, and the RSPCA,” Cr Mathers said.
“Council’s Local Laws team works tirelessly to manage unwanted litters and aggressive animals. In the long run, our support not only lightens their workload but also promotes responsible pet ownership across the community.
“As part of this initiative, pet owners can access a 20% discount on desexing services by signing up online.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity, and we encourage pet owners to get involved and make the most of it.”
Councillor Mathers said there are many benefits for pet owners to desexing domestic animals from reducing the aggressive behaviours and the desire to roam.
“Desexing your pet also removes the risk of unwanted litters and allows your pet to lead a happier, healthier life,” Cr Mathers said.
“Another benefit is discounted pet registration fees for animals that are desexed and microchipped.”
RSPCA Qld Spokesperson Emma Lagoon said Operation Wanted runs from 1 June to 31 August, giving pet owners three months to book in with a participating vet and use their discount code.
“This year, RSPCA Queensland has seen an 11% increase in animals being surrendered - two leading reasons being that pet owners are unable to afford their pet, or animals are simply unwanted,” Ms Lagoon said.
“Thanks to Rockhampton Regional Council and Capricorn Vet Surgery, discounted pet desexing in the region can help prevent unwanted animals from entering pounds and shelters and also reduce pet care costs for owners.”
