Rockhampton Regional Council today approved a pilot waterski event to take place on the Mount Morgan No.7 Dam. The event, which will be run by Waterski Queensland Inc, will take place on the 15 and 16 December.

Sports Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the event promised to draw a crowd.

“This event will see 30 competitors waterskiing around the Mount Morgan No.7 Dam, no doubt in front of huge numbers of onlookers.

“If the weekend is a success it could lead to the Queensland State titles being held there, as well as other Waterski Queensland events.

“Mount Morgan has faced a tough time recently, and we are all very disappointed at the upcoming closure of TMC Tours after the State Government restricted access to the mine site.

“Council will keep working hard to promote and attract events to this beautiful historic place, as there are still many things which make it of interest to tourists. The Waterski event is an excellent example of that.”

Robert Mitchell from Waterski Queensland Central Region said he was grateful for Council’s support.

“Waterskiing is a popular sport for participants and spectators alike. One of the great things about the dam’s location is that we can hold an event where the public can get a great view.

“The Mount Morgan No. 7 Dam also has the benefit of year round skiing and easy access to the water.

“We will be starting small, but all being well we are really excited by the prospect of building this event and attracting skiers from other regions. We have even been in talks with the 2017 World Champion to see if can come to Mount Morgan for events and tuition in the future.

Councillor Rutherford said she was excited for the event already.

“It will be a great opportunity for people to not only see some excellent water skiing, but also to stay in and explore the historic town of Mount Morgan.”
