New shared path paves the way for pedestrian safety

Rockhampton Regional Council is pleased to announce the completion of a new shared path along Norman Road, from Farm Street to Richardson Road, which will enhance cyclist and pedestrian accessibility and safety in our community.
The new shared path forms an integral piece of Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy aimed at promoting active transportation and improving connectivity for the community.
The project is funded by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program and Rockhampton Regional Council.
Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said the construction of the shared path will improve the area, providing a dedicated space for cyclists and pedestrians by separating them from traffic and enhancing overall safety.
“The construction of this new shared path is a testament to Councils ongoing commitment to prioritising pedestrian and cyclist safety and encouraging sustainable modes of transportation," Cr Smith said.
“We see a lot of foot and bike traffic on this side of Norman Road, and we want to ensure we provide the infrastructure that will benefit and assist our residents.
“By expanding the walking and cycling infrastructure network, we aim to foster a more inclusive and vibrant community, where residents can safely and conveniently use the area on foot or by bicycle.
Construction commenced in mid-August and has now been completed. Works included the construction of a new shared path, minor relocation of the bus stop and modified signals to improve the pedestrian crossing.
Divisional Councillor Shane Latcham said this project will bring a range of benefits to the area.
"Norman Road is a popular area for pedestrians and cyclists and this new shared path will improve accessibility," Cr Latcham said.
“The shared path will also contribute to the overall aesthetics of the area, creating an inviting environment that promotes healthy and active lifestyles, encouraging residents to choose walking or cycling for their daily commutes and recreational activities.
"I thank the Queensland Government for contributing to the project and I’m glad to see this project completed for the community to enjoy.”
