Mountain biking enthusiasts and thrill-seekers from across the state will gear up to take on the diverse terrain at the First Turkey MTB Reserve, as the 2023 AusCycling Gravity Enduro State Championships kick off this weekend.
The exhilarating sporting event will be hosted by the Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club, that received $3,500 towards the event during Round One 2023/24 of Council’s Community Assistance Program (CAP), which Mayor Tony Williams said will provide a significant boost to the local sporting scene in Rockhampton.
“Council is proud to sponsor this unique sporting event which will not only bring together local and state-wide riding competitors but will also attract up to 400 spectators from across Queensland - with some competitors and spectators travelling interstate,” Mayor Williams said.
“Rockhampton has a rich history of embracing outdoor sports and adventure, and the 2023 AusCycling Gravity Enduro State Championships will further elevate the city's status as a sporting hub.
“Not only does this event provide a thrilling experience for riders and spectators but is also expected to have a positive economic impact on the region with local businesses, hotels, and restaurants likely to see increased patronage across the 2-day event.”
Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the Community Assistance Program is a vital initiative and reinforces Council's commitment to support recreational activities and community sports in the region.
“This program continues to be instrumental in fostering a sense of community pride, boosting Rockhampton’s local sporting scene and contributing to the growth and development of our region,” Cr Wickerson said.
“At its core, the funding program is about supporting events, projects and initiatives that benefit the entire community, and it’s something we’re very proud to deliver.
“It’s wonderful to be able to sponsor not-for-profit organisations like the Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club and provide opportunities for sporting excellence – with the competition guaranteed to be a thrilling showcase of gravity-defying skill and determination.”
Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club Event Director, Jake Keleher said that the club are anticipating 150 competitors to participate throughout the weekend, with up to 80% of those competitors travelling to the region for the event.
“The event consists of 6 competitive race stages which riders will tackle over the 2-day event,” Mr Keleher said.
“Each stage requires a mix of physical fitness as well as technical riding ability to master the natural flow or technical aspects like roots, rocks, jumps and drops - the lowest combined time for all 6 stages over the weekend is declared the winner.
“We have both male and female participants from ages as young as 11 years old, all the way up to 65+, so there really is a category for everyone no matter their age or ability”.
The 2023 AusCycling Gravity Enduro State Championships will be held 16-17 September 2023.
