Mount Morgan is set to cement its place as a favourite among motorsport enthusiasts when the Gold Rush Hill Sprint is held this weekend.

Set over two kilometres on the Mount Morgan Range, the event will see 100 drivers compete through 24 turns and a 160 metre incline in what is Australia’s longest hill race.

Rockhampton Regional Council Committee Chair of Sports and Recreation Councillor Rutherford said Council was proud to support the event with $25,000 in sponsorship.

“This has been a passion project of the Central Queensland Motor Sports Club for some years and I’m thrilled to see it come to fruition,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The club has worked closely with TMR to close the Range for the event and Council is proud to support the race in the hope it will become an iconic race meet that will only get bigger and become a fixture on the motor racing calendar.

“It’s really pleasing to see an event being held in one of our regional centres as well and I know Mount Morgan will appreciate the economic activity driven by this influx of visitors,” Cr Rutherford said.

CQMSC President Craig Jervis said the event would be the biggest motorsport event in the Region.

“This event absolutely has the potential to become an iconic race just like Bathurst,” Mr Jervis said.

“Motorsport matters and the response we’ve had for this event is incredible and it will be one of the most challenging hillsprints in Australia to test man and machine.”

The Gold Rush Hill Sprint will be held this Saturday at the Mount Morgan Range.
