Mount Morgan is on alert for possible water restrictions, with Rockhampton Regional Council calling on the community to reduce non‑essential water use.

Water Councillor Edward Oram said that after a significant increase in consumption over recent weeks, the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant is struggling to keep pace.

“Our treatment plants can only process and deliver a set amount of water each day,” Cr Oram said.

“When usage exceeds that capacity, our reservoirs cannot fully recover, and this is what we’re currently experiencing with the Mount Morgan water supply.

“The levels of treated water storage available for the Mount Morgan community reduces everyday where usage is higher than treatment capacity.

“Given this, we’re asking households to reduce their consumption and make changes wherever possible.”

Cr Oram said the call out to the community comes in a bid to avoid water restrictions.

“We can’t continue to put strain on the treatment plant, so unless residents voluntarily reduce consumption, water restrictions will be implemented,” Cr Oram said.

“Cutting back on outdoor water usage is the best way of doing this as it makes up 75 per cent of total consumption.

“Limiting activities such as car washing, pool refilling, and choosing better times to water the garden will all help ease the pressure.”

Cr Oram thanked the community for their ongoing support, particularly as Council counts down to the completion of Mount Morgan’s water supply upgrade.

“We’re getting closer to seeing the taps turned on for Mount Morgan’s pipeline,” Cr Oram said.

“We can’t wait to celebrate this with the community, and in the meantime, we ask residents to do what they can to decrease water use.

“Every effort now will help stabilise supply and reduce the need for restrictions.”

Tips to reduce water consumption:

  1. Limit non-essential water use like refilling pools
  2. Water gardens early morning or evening to reduce evaporation
  3. Use mulch to lock in soil moisture
  4. Water deeply and less often for healthier plants
