Mayor and Salvation Army launch ‘Fill a Fridge’ appeal

Published on 24 February 2015

After receiving desperate pleas for food from those severely affected from Cyclone Marcia, Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow and the Salvation Army have promptly launched the “Fill a Fridge” initiative.

Mayor Strelow and Salvation Army’s Major Colin Maxwell are appealing for the public to dig deep and are urging those in-need to seek support through this initiative.

“I'm very much aware that some who lost the contents of their fridges are struggling to find the money to buy more food,” Mayor Strelow said.

“Casual workers lost pay and some young mums were barely keeping it together financially before this event.

“Please remember that there is no shame in going to the Salvos at a time like this.”

Bank accounts have been set up for the public to generously donate money, which in turn, will directly go towards helping others get a kick-start once power has been restored.

Major Maxwell says the Salvation Army is prepared to work overtime to get essential foods on the table for those going without.

“The Salvation Army is always concerned for people in need and we have been feeding up to 900 people per day, which is very satisfying,” Major Maxwell said.

“Locals who need food are being asked to make an appointment with the Salvation Army Welfare Officer, where a brief interview will be conducted for eligibility, and Woolworths cards donated.”

The ‘Fill a Fridge’ initiative is also available to Livingstone Shire residents affected by the disaster.
