RMOA Exhibition is Good as Gold
Published on 10 November 2025
Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) is set to dazzle with its latest exhibition, Good as Gold.
The show comprises 47 artworks, made up of winning, donated and purchased artworks from more than ten years of The Gold Award art prize, alongside additional works by Gold artists.
Named for benefactor Moya Gold, the exhibition is a bold and bright showcase of Australian contemporary artists, celebrating the rich culture of giving and philanthropy in Rockhampton.
All of the works on display are part of the RMOA Collection. Many have never been seen together before now, and some are having their first showing in the RMOA building.
Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said that the exhibition is a marvellous opportunity for people to see artworks from the RMOA Collection, all of which have a common link back to The Gold Award.
“Rockhampton is well known for its nationally significant art collection. The Gold Award is one of the ways that RMOA can not only grow the collection but also to keep it contemporary. So it’s great to see a selection of these works that have been acquired, donated and purchased, on display in the one exhibition.
“The artists represented with works in this exhibition reads like a who’s who in contemporary artistic practice in Australia today so I encourage ratepayers and visitors to come and see this exhibition,” he said.
The exhibition features works by:
Abdul Abdullah, Tony Albert, Del Kathryn Barton, Richard Bell, Jason Benjamin, Jon Cattapan, Julie Fragar, Dale Frank, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, Pat Hoffie, John Honeywill, Gordon Hookey, Jumaadi, Tjungkara Ken, Richard Lewer, Rosella Namok, Euan Macleod, N Marawili (c. 1939-2023), Julian Meagher, Ryan Presley, Bundit Puangthong, Ben Quilty, Victoria Reichelt, Monica Rohan, Paul Ryan, Gareth Sansom, Wendy Sharpe, Kate Shaw, Ian Smith, Imants Tillers, Louise Tuckwell and Michael Zavros.
The Gold Award, which began in 2012, is the richest painting prize in Queensland. Moya Gold’s bequest funded an invitational award to acquire contemporary Australian paintings. The most outstanding work is awarded a cash prize of $50,000 and the artwork is acquired to the Nationally recognised RMOA Collection.
Other works are acquired through gifts by artists and purchases by donors such as the Gold Donors, a donor campaign of the RMOA Philanthropy Group.
The exhibition also includes some interactive activities inspired by artworks by Monica Rohan and John Honeywill, perfect for the upcoming summer school holidays.
Good as Gold is on display at RMOA from 8 November until 1 March 2026. Exhibition entry is Free.
Official Launch Saturday 22 November at 6pm, ticketed event. RMOA Members free, general admission $15 prior bookings required.
