Council is inviting residents to submit their feedback on a potential alignment for the proposed multi-use rail trail between Mount Morgan and Gracemere.

A feasibility study for the trail is currently underway, which is proudly funded by the Queensland Government.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams encouraged everyone to put forward their thoughts.

“The project is only in concept stage at the moment, so it’s a fantastic time to get involved and really have your say,” Mayor Williams said.

“Council Officers have been working with our contractor – Burchills Engineering Solutions – to create a preferred route for the trail.

“We would like to hear your opinion on the potential route, as well as what you would like to see if the trail goes ahead.

“There are a few ways to give feedback, either come along to one of our community information stalls being held in Gracemere, Mount Morgan and Rockhampton - or complete the survey online.”

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the project was part of the Queensland Government’s $14 million investment to support local governments to plan, design and build rail trails.

“We are investing in rail trails on disused railway corridors to encourage walking, bike riding and horse riding, by making active transport an easier and enjoyable choice for more Queenslanders,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“Rail trails support active, healthy lifestyles and contribute to environmental preservation and management.

“They also create diversity in local economies and encourage the growth and creation of small businesses in hospitality and tourism.”

Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the potential for this project was identified by the Mount Morgan community through the development of the Advancing Mount Morgan Strategy.

“One of the key areas identified in this strategy is the need to unlock the tourism potential of Mount Morgan’s multiple natural and historic assets, and projects like the rail trail could do just that,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I do want to emphasise that no decision has been made at this stage about whether or not the project will go ahead, so if you have a strong opinion that is something we absolutely want to know.”
