Emergency service organisations across the Rockhampton Region are calling for new volunteers to join them in providing vital services to our community.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams, has said that the SES, Rural Fire Service, Australian Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Lifeline (UnitingCare) volunteers make a huge difference in the region, and that joining an emergency services organisation can be an incredible experience.

“During the fires in November last year it was absolutely amazing to see how the community came together. We received so many offers from people eager to know how they could help out,” said Cr Williams.

“The best way that people can help is to join one of our fantastic emergency services organisations now, so that they’re equipped with the essential skills and knowledge we rely on when disaster strikes.

“These organisations all have a vital part to play in ensuring our community is as disaster resilient as possible.

“Having a well-trained pool of volunteers to call on means that we are prepared when disaster hits, that we can respond quickly and efficiently when our community needs it, and that we begin recovery work as soon as possible.”

“Joining these organisations is also a fantastic experience for the volunteers themselves,” said Cr Williams.

“Where else could you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely rescue somebody from flood waters, put out a fire, provide emergency first aid, or give emotional support to those affected by a disaster?

“Being part of these organisations is an exciting and rewarding experience, and I encourage anyone in the community to get in touch with their preferred organisation to find out more.”
