This week Rockhampton Regional Council has released a draft version of the new Sustainability Strategy (Towards 2030) for public consultation.

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said she was proud to release a draft of the strategy and eager to hear community feedback.

“Council introduced its first Sustainability Strategy in 2018, and over the years since then we have made some fantastic strides towards a more sustainable future across our region,” Cr Kirkland said.

“Our next strategy, Towards 2030, will build on that great work that has already taken place, as well as align with changes to environmental policy at the state, federal and international level.

“We know that as we move into the future our rapidly changing world will bring both challenges and opportunities for the Rockhampton Region.

“This strategy is about ensuring that we are strengthening our community, environmental and economic resilience. It also recognises that we can’t do this alone.

Towards 2030 outlines the four interconnected pathways our community needs to take to a sustainable future - through Council Operations and Services; Individuals and Households; Community and Local Groups and Business, Industry and Government.

“The strategy also details a range of strategic actions that support each of these pathways.

“Through Towards 2030 we’re looking for new ways to strengthen our capacity to live sustainably; create even more liveable and resilient communities; position our Region to thrive; and continually improve our environment and sustainability performance across Council’s operations and services.

“At its heart, sustainability is about taking care of the environment, so that our environment can continue to take care of us. It’s a path that our community walks together, and I would encourage everyone to take a look at the draft strategy and let us know any thoughts that you have.

“I’m looking forward to working with you on the next chapter of the Rockhampton Region’s sustainability journey.”

The draft Sustainability Strategy (Towards 2030) is open for community feedback until 5pm Friday 23 September.
