Countdown is on for Major QLD Touch Football State Cup

The countdown is on for the State’s most prestigious touch football event with the Queensland Junior State Cup set to bring 230 teams to the city in July.

After being held on the Fraser Coast for the last decade, Parks Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the major sporting event, which will now feature biennially on the Region’s sporting calendar, is a real win for the community.

“The Queensland Touch Football Junior State Cup is not only a fantastic sporting event but also a major economic driver for the Region with the influx of visitors and participants expected to provide a huge boost to the local tourism industry and to local businesses,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We are so looking forward to welcoming the teams and the players to our Region and seeing some of the best young touch football talent in the state.”

Following recent vandalism at the Cyril Connell Fields and Norbridge Park, Cr Rutherford added that Council has made the decision to temporarily restrict afterhours vehicle access to protect the fields from further damage ahead of the event.

“In recent weeks, there have been a number of occasions where vehicles have been driven onto the grounds after hours damaging the surface of the field,” Cr Rutherford said. 

“It’s frustrating when poor choices and actions of a few people have the potential to cause massive disruption, so it is important that we put these measures in place for the time being.”

Vehicle access to the fields will be restricted between 10pm and 4.45am from 28 April to 10 July. There will be no impact to existing sporting programs and users of the facilities during ordinary hours.

The boat ramp will remain accessible during this time as well as pedestrian access to the riverfront.
