Councils unite to encourage Economic Development

Rockhampton and Livingstone Shire Economic Development teams and Mayors are joining forces to grow economic development opportunities across the Region.

Meeting yesterday, key topics of discussion included engagement with China and Singapore, the resources sector and ways in which the Rockhampton Airport might support the redevelopment of resorts on the Capricorn Coast and Great Keppel Island.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said a collaborative approach is needed in priority areas that could provide a major economic boost for the neighbouring Councils.

“There are many areas where our interests are complimentary, and indeed we need each other,” Mayor Strelow said.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said that Rockhampton Regional Council had ramped up its investment in economic development dramatically in its most recent budget.

An initial action item will be to jointly prepare a follow-up proposal to further impress Adani Mining after Rockhampton Regional Council hosted senior representatives from the mining giant last month.

Mayor Strelow said the visit by senior Executives from Adani Mining was very positive and that the region now had a clearer picture of what it would take to encourage their active presence in our community.

Livingstone Shire Council Mayor Bill Ludwig said there are a number of significant economic development opportunities that would be best realised through a collaborative partnership between our respective Councils.

“If we are going to generate and facilitate the private sector investment necessary to deliver the growth and long-term jobs that this region desperately needs, economic development must continue to be a key focus for both Councils,” Mayor Ludwig said.

“Adopting a collaborative approach where possible will ensure we are well-positioned to efficiently and effectively focus our combined resources to achieve the best possible outcomes for our communities and the region,” Cr Ludwig said.
