Rockhampton Regional Council has this week voted to invite commercial tenders for the lease of the old Mount Morgan Squash Courts, at 36 Thompson Avenue, Mount Morgan.

The decision follows a two-month Expressions of Community Interest (ECI) process finalised in February which sought eligible non-profit community organisations to take on a lease to benefit the wider community, growing local programs and community involvement.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said that while there was dialogue suggesting a community organisation would be interested, no submissions were received.

“We did however receive an inquiry from a commercial organisation interested in leasing the building,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The building, constructed in the 1970s, is still in good condition, with a kitchenette recently installed.

“Minor repairs would be needed, dependent on use, and a code assessable development application may be required if the preferred commercial use is contradictory to the existing land use.”

“The building is located in an excellent location with a playground, skate park and swimming pool nearby, and we hope a motivated and stable commercial tenant sees this opportunity as a profitable business venture,” Cr Rutherford said.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity for a commercial tenant to become part of the Mount Morgan community and bring real value to our region.”

Council officers will now commence preparation of tender documents for release on Vendor Panel in coming months.
