Rockhampton Regional Council has praised the community response to the worldwide campaign “Zonta says NO to Violence against women”, which finishes this weekend after running for the past two weeks.

Zonta is a global organisation which aims to empower women worldwide through service and advocacy. Council has supported the campaign by lighting up Quay Street orange as well as displaying the message at the Rockhampton Airport.

Chair of the Airport Committee Neil Fisher said Council was proud to support this campaign and send a clear message to the community.

“Rockhampton Airport is the first entry point for many people who come to Central Queensland and it’s great to have an opportunity and show what we stand for and support this incredibly important message here.

“Council would like to work with Zonta in the coming years and make this even bigger and better in the future. We have a fantastic team at the airport and this is such a great step,” Cr Fisher said.

Advocacy Committee Chair for the Zonta Club Rockhampton Jan Landsberg said the organisation was proud to partner with Council to get the important message out into the community.

“Our whole objective is to support issues that support women and girls, and of course trying to eliminate domestic violence. As well as that, Zonta says yes to gender equality – two planks within the Zonta mission.

“Very kindly, the airport and Rockhampton Regional Council have enabled us to have this display and have information and resources on hand for anyone who is having issues with domestic violence.

“This is a space where so many people come and we have a great central position. It’s great to see people stopping and reading what we have displayed and hopefully this will enable more people to have more awareness and take information if they need it,” Ms Landsberg said.
