Council support helps gymnastics competition leap into Rockhampton

One hundred and fifty athletes will tumble into competition at this weekend's 2026 CQ Women's Artistic Gymnastics Junior Regional Championships at Victoria Park.
Parks, Sport, and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Rockhampton Regional Council is supporting the event with a $6,272 sponsorship through the Community Assistance Program.
“We are very excited to be supporting this year's competition. This event is so well loved within our gymnastics community, and it is incredibly important for our young athletes because we could be watching future Olympians and Commonwealth Games representatives,” Cr Rutherford said.
“Supporting events like the Junior Regional Championships is important for Council because it helps clubs put on top-class events that people want to come back for.
“Having hundreds of people come to the region for events like this is also great for our local economy, with visitors staying in our hotels and eating at our cafes, pubs and restaurants. These events also create a sense of community and bring people together."
Victoria Park Gymnastics and Trampoline Club Committee President Kirsty Zaghini said the club was expecting up to 500 spectators, coaches, officials, volunteers and family members to attend the competition.
She said the Community Assistance Program funding would help offset the costs associated with hosting a regional championship and enable the club to deliver a high-quality event.
“Gymnastics continues to be one of Queensland's most popular participation sports, with strong growth driven by its ability to develop the fundamental movement skills that underpin lifelong physical activity,” Ms Zaghini said.
“At Victoria Park Gymnastics and Trampoline Club, we have seen steady growth in participation across our recreational programs, which provide the foundation for our competitive pathways.
“The funding has contributed to the purchase of new equipment, safety equipment and a first aid bed, helping us provide a safe, well-equipped and professionally run competition for everyone involved.”
The Community Assistance Program supports non-profit, community-based organisations through grants and sponsorships for projects and events that enhance the wellbeing of the region.
Applications for the next round of the Community Assistance Program open in September.
