Council looks to catch larger tourism industry

There’s no denying Rockhampton’s reputation as the Beef Capital but a draft strategy released by Council this week may also see it known for its Barramundi.
Yesterday Rockhampton Regional Councillors unanimously passed the draft Rockhampton Recreational Fishing Development Strategy– a plan to ultimately develop the Region’s recreational fishing experience to become an internationally recognised adventure tourism destination.
Mayor of Rockhampton Region Margaret Strelow said it means big things for the Region and recreational fishers.
“Our Region has what it takes to be a widely known fishing attraction,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We have strong local support – with one in five of our community members being fishing enthusiasts. We have the Fitzroy River, a number of other productive local waterways all containing highly sought after fish like the of Barramundi and King Threadfin.
“We want to take what we have and further enhance it and see the Region a fishing hotspot.”
The strategy aims to develop recreational fishing businesses, market the Region, improve local fisheries management practices and work towards a healthier Fitzroy River system.
It also aims to specifically improve marine and freshwater infrastructure, which Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee Cr Tony Williams said the Region is in particular need of.
“Land based fishing platforms along the Fitzroy River and new boat ramp facilities in North Rockhampton and Port Alma coupled with car parking extensions are all on the list,” Cr Williams said.
The draft strategy has been developed by Council over the last eight months with the assistance of numerous stakeholders and community members.
