Cr Marika Taylor - National Road Safety Week

Drive so others survive is the message Rockhampton Regional Council wants motorists and road users to remember as part of National Road Safety Week.

Held from 5-12 May, National Road Safety Week highlights the importance of road safety and is a timely reminder that we all play a part in reducing road trauma.

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said these national awareness days are important to encourage the community to keep road safety front of mind.

"National Road Safety Week provides an opportunity to reinforce the importance of being safe on the road and the role we play as motorists," Cr Taylor said.

"In the past year, 279 people lost their lives on Queensland roads, 36 of those deaths taking place on roads in Central Queensland region.

"Road trauma affects many in our community and that's why road safety must be everyone's responsibility.

"We all play a part to ensure other drivers, pedestrians and other road users arrive at their destination safely.

"Remember to drive as though we share the roads with our loved ones, hopefully this will be reflected in our actions, and we will see a decrease in the number of road-related deaths and injuries."

National Road Safety Week coincides with Beef Australia 2024 and is a timely reminder as we prepare for an increase in traffic within the Region.

"As we expect welcome more than 100,000 people to the Region throughout this week, we will certainly notice more motorists on our roads," Cr Taylor said.

"Please remember to plan your travel routes, allowing yourself extra time to arrive at your destination and, as always, exercise patience and safety with other road users."
