Twelve schools from around the Rockhampton Region have been recognised for their outstanding efforts in environmental sustainability through Council’s first ‘Sustainability in Action’ Schools Calendar Competition.

Council’s Environment Spokesperson, Councillor Drew Wickerson, said the competition was about showcasing how local schools are taking on global issues, with practical and sustainable actions.

“Schools right across our Region are already at the forefront of educating the next generation about environmental sustainability and this competition has been a way to showcase, recognise and reward these efforts,” Cr Wickerson said.

“We invited schools throughout the area to send in details and photos of their sustainability projects, and we were absolutely thrilled with the entries and the projects underway in our Region.

“The 12 winning schools and their sustainability projects will feature in the 2019 ‘Sustainability in Action’ Schools Calendar – which will be out in the community from November.

Chair of Council’s Parks Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, officially announced the competition winners during the Tropicana event, held at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday.

“From making reusable bags, to learning how to look after creeks, tending to vegetable gardens and so much more, school students are setting an example that we could all learn from when it comes to environmental sustainability,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We sincerely thank all who took part in this competition and we look forward to seeing how the prizes support continued sustainability actions in your schools. Keep up the great work!”
