Construction underway for new roundabout at Birkbeck Drive
Published on 17 June 2025
Construction of the new roundabout at the intersection of Alexandra Street and Birkbeck Drive continues as the project enters its next stage.
Funded through the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, the $6.35 million project aims to improve traffic flow and safety in the region’s rapidly growing northern corridor.
Works on the roundabout have commenced and includes bulk earthworks, drainage, pavement construction, kerbing, island works, surfacing and landscaping.
The new roundabout will also be a crucial link for the future extension of Alexandra Street that will provide access to new developments in Edenbrook and Ellida Estates.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the roundabout will support the area’s expansion by providing essential infrastructure for residents and future development.
“This project is an important step in ensuring that our road network keeps pace with the growth of Parkhurst,” Mayor Williams said.
“With thousands of new homes expected in the coming years, it’s critical that we invest in infrastructure that makes our roads safer and more efficient.
“This roundabout will improve traffic movement and safety for local residents while supporting continued development in the northern corridor.”
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said that with site and underground preparations complete, construction crews are now moving into the core roadworks phase.
“The community will start to see significant progress as the roundabout takes shape in the coming months,” Cr Taylor said.
“Birkbeck Drive will be closed for 12 months from 16 June, weather and ground conditions permitting.
“While this closure may require some residents to adjust their travel routes, it allows major works to proceed without disrupting traffic on Alexandra Street.
“Additional short-term detours and traffic changes will follow in mid-2026 to complete connections to Alexandra Street and Belmont Road.
“These may cause some temporary inconvenience, but we’ll keep the community informed every step of the way.
“We appreciate the patience of residents and motorists as we deliver this vital infrastructure.”
The Alexandra Street and Birkbeck Drive roundabout is expected to be completed by November 2026, supporting local jobs and contributing to the region’s economy throughout its construction.
