From food, to food for thought – local residents will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Indigenous culture and history on Tuesday, when Rockhampton Regional Library hosts a special community event as part of National Reconciliation Week 2018.

Held from 27 May until 3 June, National Reconciliation Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture and histories, and our shared national story.

Communities Chair, Councillor Rose Swadling said all are invited to join the Library’s free community event, which will include a film screening, bush tucker, and discussions with local Elders.

“The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2018 is ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery. Learn. Share. Grow’ and encourages as many people as possible to get involved in their local area’s events and celebrate its Indigenous heritage,” Cr Swadling said.

“It’s incredibly important to take up as many opportunities as possible to celebrate, explore and further understand our Indigenous culture and history and we would love as many people as possible to join us in doing this on Tuesday.

“As part of the day, Dean Gibson’s award winning, ten minute film Welcome to Country will be screened. This will be followed by discussions with local Elders and a European Historian, who will provide comments and further insights into the film.

“It will also be a great opportunity to learn about Bush Tucker and Bush Medicine from Uncle Billy – who is a proud Darumbal man and respected Elder. Uncle Billy has grown up working on the land from being a cattleman to a marine park ranger, and his knowledge of Darumbal country is second to none.

“There will also be cuppas, wattle-seed cake, competitions and prizes – so if you are available for part of the morning, we would love to see you there,” Cr Swadling said.

The event will be held Tuesday 29 May from 9.30am until 11.30am, at the Rockhampton Regional Library.
