Community Notice - Rockhampton Zoo Visitor Hub Closure

Rockhampton Regional Council wishes to advise the community that the Zoo Visitor Hub is temporarily closed due to ongoing issues associated with static electricity build-up in the newly installed flooring.

After some recent incidences of static shocks to visitors and staff, the facility was closed while comprehensive investigations were undertaken to determine whether any electrical fault was contributing to the issue.

Investigations confirmed there were no electrical faults, with the flooring material identified as the cause of the incidents due to static electricity generated in certain climatic conditions.

Following these findings, Council implemented a range of targeted mitigation measures and reopened the Visitor Hub. However, further reports of static discharge were received last week.

As a result, Council has made the decision to close the Visitor Hub again while longer term solutions to address the static electricity issue are assessed and implemented.

The safety and wellbeing of our community, visitors and staff remain Council's highest priority.

The zoo itself continues to operate as normal, with visitor entry redirected to Gate 2 (the former main zoo entrance) and amenities available at the Botanic Gardens Tearooms.

We understand this is inconvenient, and we thank the community for their patience and understanding as we work towards a permanent resolution.
