With less than 5 weeks to go until Christmas, Rockhampton’s CBD is getting into the festive spirit thanks to initiatives from Rockhampton Regional Council.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said Advance Rockhampton, Council’s economic development, tourism and events arm, had been working hard alongside local community groups to get Rocky ready for Santa’s arrival.

“I can’t quite believe it’s that time of year again! But Christmas is indeed coming and from today you’ll start to notice lots of lovely festive things in the Rockhampton CBD.

“We have partnered with the Inner Wheel Club of Rockhampton Sunset to fill five different shop fronts with beautiful Christmas themed displays.

“They will also feature the wonderful recycled tyre Christmas Trees made by local youth groups and we need you to vote for your favourite – the winning group will receive a $500 voucher so make sure you pop in to Coffee Society or Stewarts before December 6 to let us know which one has got you feeling Christmassy.

“Council has also set up a fun snap and share spot at 114 East Street where you can star in your very own Christmas picture. You just need to decide if you want to be an elf or Santa!”

Mayor Strelow also shared a special surprise for the region’s younger residents.

“Finally, if you head down to Customs House at Quay Street you’ll find a very special letterbox. If you put your letter to Santa in there before December 18 and include your home address, we will make sure he writes back to you before Christmas comes around.

“This is of course on top of the fabulous Christmas Fair and Christmas Tree lighting on December 7.

“It’s certainly beginning to look a lot like Christmas!”

Robyn Stoddart, President of Inner Wheel Club of Rockhampton Sunset, said decorating the East Street shops was a great opportunity to work with Council and give service to the community.

“It’s been so lovely to have people stop and chat to us on their way past about the decorations we are putting up, and I’m pleased to say all the reviews have been positive so far!

“Inner Wheel Club is an international women's organisation set up to create friendship, service and understanding. It has had clubs in over 100 countries with over 100,000 members and it’s all about fun and making friends while serving the community. This is such a great way to do it!

“If you’re a woman living in the region who would like to get more involved in our activities and meet some likeminded ladies then please do get in touch.”
