Catch the Fitzroy’s $10K Tagged Thready
Published on 01 November 2021
Fishing The Fitzroy’s $10K Thready competition is back! The annual competition is open to anglers of all ages and skill levels, with a $10,000 cash prize up for grabs to the first person to catch a tagged king threadfin in the Fitzroy River system.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said it’s great to see the competition back for a second year and is a fantastic addition to the region’s annual fishing tournament calendar.
“Rockhampton is well-known as the Home of the Barramundi, yet the region has many other fish species in the Fitzroy River system including king threadfin,” Mayor Williams said.
“King threadfin are a spectacularly hard-fighting fish that can be targeted all year around, making Rockhampton the perfect destination for keen anglers to visit.
“With Rockhampton’s Recreational Fishing Voluntary Code of Practice in place now for 6 years, this competition is also a great initiative to support sustainable fishing in our region during the barramundi closed season.”
Advance Rockhampton Executive Manager Greg Bowden, said the competition is a great way to promote Rockhampton as an all year round fishing destination.
“This competition will continue to help spread the word of our region’s unique tourism offering of chasing trophy sized fish in the heart of the city,” Mr Bowden said.
“While no one was lucky enough to catch the tagged thready last year, the competition saw 529 entrants with 28% of participants coming from out of region, all spending money in local hospitality and fishing businesses.
“If you do not have a boat, Rockhampton has a number of great fishing charters and dry boat hire options to get you out on the water or you can fish the Fitzroy from one of the many land-based fishing platforms around the region.”
Fishing the Fitzroy’s $10k Thready Competition runs from 1 November 2021 through to mid-night 31 January 2022.
