Canning Street upgrades progress update

Rockhampton Regional Council’s works to fully reconstruct Canning Street are progressing well, with drainage, kerb and channel works along the eastern side nearing completion.
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said despite recent heavy rainfall, the works remain on track.
“There are a number of sections of this project that are nearing completion, which is fantastic considering the heavy downpours we’ve had recently,” Cr Taylor said.
“Council crews have just completed the retaining wall and footpath works on the corner of Canning and Cambridge Streets, and kerb and channel works between Albert and Voss Streets are underway.
“Crews have now we begun kerb and channel and driveway works around the Albert Street corner, and will continue this work towards Voss Street. After this, stormwater drainage works will move to the hospital side of Canning Street.
“Traffic management for the next month will see the current road closure on Canning Street continue. This means vehicles can travel down the street from North Street to Cambridge Street, and the left‑turn‑only arrangement from Albert Street will also remain.”
Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson thanked the community for their patience while works continue.
“It’s great to see works along Canning Street are progressing well,” Cr Wickerson said.
“We know how frustrating traffic changes can be along a busy road such as Canning Street, so we want to sincerely thank the community for their patience.”
Works on the Canning Street upgrades began in October 2025 and include a full road reconstruction and new footpaths on both sides of the road.
The project is expected to be completed by October 2026, subject to weather and ground conditions.
