Rockhampton Regional Council is getting ready for this National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day later this month with thousands of new trees expected to be planted across the region.

The Schools Tree Day will be held on 27th July and Parks Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford encouraged schools to register their interest as a planting site.

“Local schools are a massive part of this event and Council is proud to supply the plants for these events. Across the country each year, around 200 000 Australian school students participate in a special National Tree Day event designed just for children.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get kids into nature and instil a love for the great outdoors, as well as teach them the importance of environmental stewardship and taking care of their planet,” Cr Rutherford said.

Environment Councillor Drew Wickerson said National Tree Day will be held the following Sunday on the 29th July with three sites selected this year.

“Newman Oval at Mount Morgan, O’Shanesy Park in Rockhampton and Frenchman’s Creek in North Rockhampton have been selected as the sites this year with public plantings to take place from 11am-1pm.

“One of the best things about National Tree Day is watching the trees planted from previous years grow and mature into flourishing, green areas that our community and visitors can enjoy every day and for years to come,” Cr Wickerson said.

To register your school, please contact Council on 4932 9000 or 1300 22 55 77 or follow the links at www.treeday.planetark.org.

Those interesting in coming along on the 29 July do not need to pre-register.
