Part of the Pack launches at Allenstown State School

Rockhampton Regional Council today launched Part of the Pack, a new pet education program, with NRL legend Sam Thaiday taking a starring role.

Chair of Council’s Planning Committee, Councillor Ellen Smith, said the program was all about helping kids stay safe and healthy around dogs.

“We are devoted here in the Rockhampton Region, with dogs in particular being a popular furry friend.

“The companionship and joy that comes with having a pet as part of the family is wonderful, but it’s vital to start talking to kids about staying safe and healthy around animals from an early age.

“The Part of the Pack program, which Council is offering to deliver free of charge, includes a fun video featuring Sam Thaiday, a presentation, and activity booklets.

“We can even organise for a trained and socialised dog to come along and meet the kids!

“The sessions will be targeted at different ages, with the older children also learning about the responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

“So we are calling on early learning childhood centres, primary schools, outside school hours care groups, and vacation care centres to get in touch, book your session, and become Part of the Pack!”

The program’s focus is principally about being safe and healthy around dogs and pets and aligns to aspects of the Australian Curriculum Health and Physical Education: Personal, Social and Community Health learning area and encourages our young people to be healthy, safe and active.

The video featuring Sam Thaiday is available now on Council’s facebook and Youtube, and more videos will be released in coming weeks.
