The beating heart of the Rockhampton CBD is set to get a workout this weekend when the latest Lively Quay Street event runs into town – the U12 Fitzroy Frogs Excess Energy Duathlon.

Following its multi-million dollar makeover, the Lively Quay Street program has already played host to festivals, concerts, markets and workshops with Sunday’s event the latest to showcase the versatility of the redesigned space.

Rockhampton Regional Council Acting Mayor, Cr Rutherford, said the space is set to host even more events with Council planning to call for more expressions of interest following the opening of the low bank redevelopment in March.

“It has been absolutely fantastic to see people back in this space and enjoying Quay Street like never before.  As we continue to explore and unlock the potential use of the Riverbank Precinct in the future, this program has so far proven that Quay Street is open to hosting a diverse range of events,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Once the lower bank re-opens in March, we will then look at calling for further expressions of interests from event organisers who want to make use of this incredible new space that we are so fortunate to have in the heart of our city.”

Craig McCormack, President of Fitzroy Frogs Triathlon and one of the organisers of this weekend’s Under 12 Duathlon event, said the Lively Quay Street program was an opportunity to create a fun event for kids to get out and active.

“When this initiative came up, we saw it as a chance  to provide an event for kids, similar to a triathlon or the Rocky River Run but targeted at Under 12’s, to make them feel like they too have the opportunity to participate in a community event with a great atmosphere,” Mr McCormack said.

“The Duathlon is all about getting kids under age 12 together, with their bikes, scooters and running shoes and we couldn’t think of a more enjoyable and inspiring venue than the riverfront. Quay Street really lends itself to kids and we hope we can make this into a regular event in the future.”
