Australia Day to be celebrated across the region

Communities from across the Rockhampton Region are making plans to celebrate Australia Day, with Gracemere planning to give a special thank you to our firies.

Mount Morgan Rotary Club and the Bouldercombe Progress Association will also be hosting events.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said there would be an opportunity for Gracemere residents to add a personal touch to the local Rural Fire Service’s new marquee, which is a gift from Council and the community.

“Those bushfires were one of the greatest threats we have ever faced. I cannot thank firefighters enough for working around the clock to control those fires, and ultimately saving our community from catastrophe,” Mayor Strelow said.

“As a small token of our appreciation we will be giving the Gracemere Rural Fire Service a new marquee, and we would love residents to add their messages of support and thanks.”

The marquee and writing materials will be available at the event, along with a sausage sizzle and a horn blowing competition.

Mayor Strelow said residents will be able to spend their whole Australia Day enjoying free events right across our region.

“We are seeing more and more events happening across our vibrant region, and Australia Day is no different. I’m delighted that Council was able to support every organisation that applied for funds from our Australia Day Grant Program, with nearly $6,000 being awarded.

“That means well as the Gracemere Men’s Shed event at Cedric Archer Park, there will be a family fun day at Mount Morgan with a BBQ, ice cream, face painting and rides, and a community gathering featuring classic Aussie sports in Bajool.

“My advice is to enjoy these events in the morning, head to Kershaw Gardens from 3pm for Great Australian Bites and our Australia Day Awards, try out some Aussie sports in Bajool, and finish off your weekend at the Heritage Village Markets on Sunday.

“What a perfect way to celebrate the Australia Day weekend!”
