Rockhampton Regional Libraries have been struck by cupid's arrow and will be celebrating two literacy-themed events on 14 February - Library Lover’s Day and International Book Giving Day.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said we celebrate Library Lover's Day to acknowledge libraries, library staff, and all the wonderful services and resources they provide that enrich our daily lives.

“Celebrating International Book Giving Day on the same date perfectly complements the role of libraries in our region, and our First 5 Forever (F5F) program in particular, as they have a shared goal of getting books into the hands of as many children as possible” Cr Wickerson said.

“Thanks to First 5 Forever grant funding from the State Library of Queensland, Rockhampton libraries can encourage children aged 0-5 years to read by supplying them with a free book.

“This special day will not only celebrate the love libraries bring to the community but will encourage a new generation of bookworms and increase kids’ love and enthusiasm for books and reading.

“If you’re up to 5 years of age, get your grown-up - whether that is mum, dad, grandparent, sibling, guardian or carer - to bring you along to the Southside, Northside or Gracemere libraries between 9.00am and 4.30pm on Tuesday 14 February.

“You can pick your choice of book from a range of great titles on offer, including books by popular children’s authors such as Dr Seuss, Lynley Dodd, Aaron Blabey, Lauren Child and Nick Bland.

“Mount Morgan library is closed on Tuesdays, so we’ll be celebrating these special days on Wednesday 15 February, with the same great range of books available.

“If you’re not a library member, get your parent or guardian to register you on the day – all new members up to 5 years of age get a free kit of First 5 Forever resources when they join, so you’ll have even more library and literacy goodies to enjoy!

“Make sure you mark the date on your calendar. We can’t wait to share the love (and the books) with you at your local library."

First 5 Forever is an initiative of the Queensland Government, coordinated by State Library of Queensland and delivered in partnership with local government.
