The Gold Award History

The Gold Award is designed as an invitation award to consider the best in contemporary painting whilst simultaneously building a substantive contemporary collection for Rockhampton Art Gallery. The most outstanding work or works by an artist is awarded a $50,000 cash prize and acquired into the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection.

The Gold Award has been made possible through the generous bequest of $600,000 from the Estate of Moya Gold (1928-2000), a local philanthropist who understood the joys and opportunities of arts and education. Since 2016 The Gold Award has also been supported by Rockhampton Regional Council, which continues to invest in providing cultural experiences for Central Queenslanders.

Previous winners of The Gold Award are Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori in 2012, Imants Tillers in 2014, Jon Cattapan in 2016 and Richard Bell in 2018. Through exhibition in The Gold Award, the Gallery has also acquired paintings by Del Kathryn Barton, Julie Fragar, Jason Benjamin, Victoria Reichelt, Kate Shaw, Michael Zavros, Dale Frank, Richard Lewer, Bundit Puangthong, Paul Ryan and Ben Quilty.
