Deceased or Injured Wildlife

General Information

Wildlife dies from time to time due to a range of reasons.  Extreme weather events can sometimes lead to mass deaths for some species.

What you can do

If you find any sick, injured or orphaned animals, please contact the RSPCA on 1300 264 625 (1300 ANIMAL).

You can remove deceased wildlife by bagging and placing it in your bin. If you are removing a deceased flying fox, use a shovel and gloves and avoid contact and being scratched. If you are scratched seek medical attention.

If it is suspected that the death of an animal has been caused by diseases such as avian influenza, contact the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on 13 25 23 (business hours) or the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 (afterhours).

If you have witnessed the deliberate killing of wildlife or have another related complaint in relation to wildlife, please contact 1300 130 372.

If you notice a significant fish kill, please contact the Department of Environment and Science through the Pollution Hotline on 1300 130 372 (option 2).

What Council can do

Council will remove some wildlife from Council land, including flying foxes. Should you have a concern with deceased wildlife on Council managed land, please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 4932 9000 or 1300 22 55 77.

What the State Government can do

The Queensland Government will investigate and respond to suspected disease outbreaks and deliberate native wildlife killings and other related wildlife complaints.The Department of Environment and Science can be contacted on 1300 130 372.
