Questacon Science on the Move

SCIENCE ON THE MOVE

Enjoy, discover and explore principles of light, music and sound, human biology and health, force and motion, ecology and the environment, electricity and magnetism, human population and genetics.  Science on the Move's intriguing exhibit investigations will engage your mind and body.  Turn yourself into a battery, crank up a tornado in a bottle, escape from handcuffs, predict the outcome of chaos, build a food chain, measure your fitness and much, much more.

OVERVIEW OF THE EXHIBITS

Exhibits at Gracemere Library may include:

An orange and yellow exhibit table with matching information panel at the back and on the top is a steel arch with a string and black weight hanging down from the apex of the arch.

Chaotic Pendulum

Chaotic patterns are studied within mathematics and meteorology.

Push a magnetic pendulum and watch it swing chaotically over a metal plate.

An orange, purple, red and yellow exhibit table with a white and orange information panel at the back. On top of the table are a series of colourful gears.

Gear Table

Different sized gears turn at different speeds and force to generate mechanical advantage.

Arrange all of the gears on the table so their teeth are interlocking.  Slowly spin one of the gear wheels and watch what happens.

A blue and orange exhibit table with a white and blue information panel at the back. On the top of the table are four metal rectangular pads connected to a voltage meter.

Hand battery

Electric fields can be created when a circuit is closed in a loop formation.

Touch two metal plates to create an electric field (observed on a meter).

a red and orange exhibit table with a white and blue information panel on top. On the table top sits a clear plastic water bottle with a black top and bottom.

Ocean Diver

Pressure causes bubbles to contract and items to sink due to lower buoyancy.

Squeeze a water bottle to observe changes in bubble density, floating and sinking.

A purple exhibit table, with a white and orange information panel at the back. On top sits a series of red puzzles pieces that fit together to form enclosures.

Pig Pen Puzzle

Dissecting space efficiently can create a greater number of enclosures.

Use puzzle pieces to allocate areas and fences to different number of pigs.

An orange and blue exhibit table with a white information panel laying flat on the top, two rows of 20 millimetre pvc piping rising up from the table top, and a blue thong attached to an orange cord hanging over the table side.

Thongaphone

Air vibrates at different frequencies to generate low or high pitched sounds.

Use the rubber shoe to strike the open ended pipes and play a musical tune.

A blue and yellow exhibit table, with a white and blue informationa panel at the back. On the table top sits 4 black weights.

Weight on Different Planets

Mass and weight may be interchangeable terms, but weight relies on force applied to a mass by gravity.

Lift pods that represent the same mass, but different weights on certain planets due to gravity.
