Rockhampton Regional Council has commenced work on the next stage to extend the Gracemere Memorial Gardens.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the project will not only increase capacity, but also improve on the amenity of the facility.

“In addition to more burial sites, we are building a reinforced concrete driveway and a pathway that will connect the new section to the existing pathway in the Ashes Garden,” Cr Wickerson said.

“A new asphalt road and additional parking will provide convenient access to the new burial sites.

“And a much needed, contemporary amenities facility with all abilities access will be built in a central location to both sites.”

Divisional Councillor Ellen Smith said this extension is part of a larger plan for the Memorial Gardens and one that the community has been wanting for some time.

“We know that this project was the subject of a lot of community consultation, which resulted in the creation of the beautiful Ashes Garden in 2017,” Cr Smith said.

“I am really pleased to see this extension come into fruition.

“Our community is growing and our facilities need to grow with it.

“Council’s investment in Gracemere over the past few years, has been welcomed by our residents.

“The work that has gone into Cedric Archer Park, including a Touch of Paradise and the pump track, mean that families can spend quality time outdoors with each other, without having to travel afar.

“The extension of the Memorial Gardens means that they will be able to do the same with their departed loved ones for years to come.”

This stage of the project is set to be completed by February 2022, and there will be no disruption to funeral services during this time.
