Queensland’s most prestigious women’s barramundi tournament is set to hit the Fitzroy on October 1, bringing competitors from across Australia.

Women That Fish is a two-day event supported by Rockhampton Regional Council through a $10,000 Community Assistance Program grant.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council is proud to support the tournament.

“The Community Assistance Program is all about supporting local groups, events, and initiatives which benefit our community, and this event does just that,” said Councillor Wickerson.

“The Fitzroy is perfect for this competition. It’s not only enjoyable for residents who get out on the water, it will also attract a number of competitors from out of region and interstate, injecting money into the local economy and cementing Rockhampton’s reputation as the home of the barramundi.”

Mayor Tony Williams said this event helps to promote our Region as a premier fishing destination.

“There aren’t many places in the world you can catch metre-long barramundi so close to town,” Mayor Williams said.

“We’re the only place in Australia where you can land at the airport, check in to your hotel and be on the water in less than an hour.

“Supporting events like this is an important part of our Recreational Fishing Development Strategy. It’s a great way to show off what we have to offer.”

Event organiser Shara Vanhaeren said this year marks the 10th anniversary for the Women That Fish Barra Classic, and it is set to be bigger than ever.

“When we first started in 2011 we had twelve competitors, now we have more than 120 already registered for this year’s event!” Ms Vanhaeren said.

“It has been fantastic to see how this competition has grown. It’s a wonderful opportunity for making friends and building confidence.

“My co-founder and co-organiser Kalana Thomas and I have been working tirelessly to source sponsorship and make sure our event is a success.

“There are about $30,000 in random draw prizes up for grabs, including a brand new dingy, outboard and trailer.

“While the competition itself is only for women over 18, men can certainly get involved on the day. Skippers can do everything but cast and retrieve a rod.

“Registrations are still open – so get in touch if you want to take part!”
