Many of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Community facilities may be physically closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t access lots of our fantastic services.

Whether it’s the libraries, the Art Gallery, the Pilbeam Theatre or the Heritage Village we are working hard to bring virtual access to the community during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Communities Portfolio Spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson said there was still a whole range of things to do from home.

“I am so proud of our teams for working hard, in these most unusual of circumstances, to make sure our residents can still enjoy a range of community services.

“If you’re looking for things to do with the library then you are not short of options! With your library card and PIN you can access a number of free online services including Borrowbox, where you can borrow the latest release eBooks and eAudiobooks; Beamafilm, which provides access to hundreds of award winning documentaries and independent features; and Lynda, the leading online learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills.

“You can head to their facebook page to see weekly Lego Challenges, staff recommendations for e-books and audiobooks, and tech tips. They are also running a fortnightly STEM Club challenge every other Monday and of course they have set up the fantastic Lively Kid facebook group with story time, rhyme time, and resources for young families.

“If you’re not yet a library member now really is the time to join – it’s free and you can sign up online.”

Councillor Wickerson said the virtual access wasn’t just limited to the libraries.

“Our brilliant Art Gallery team will be bringing you their fantastic Messy Mondays classes via facebook starting next week, and they’re already sharing videos of fascinating art talks on Instagram.

“They’re also sharing behind the scenes looks at the gallery and some of their favourite artworks.

“They even have a podcast called Behind the Art – be sure to subscribe for free.

“If you enjoy a blast from the past then make sure you are following the Pilbeam Theatre’s Facebook page. Theatre staff have been delving into more than 40 years of the venue’s history and every Friday at 11am you can experience old photos of the venue, performers, memorabilia and anecdotes.

“They are also sharing the stories behind theatre superstitions, and highlighting opportunities to watch theatre from around the world online.

“Every Monday the Heritage Village facebook page is sharing some great ‘then and now’ photos, giving a real insight into the different buildings and artefacts at our wonderful living museum.

“Like everyone else I am looking forward to being able to physically go back into our fantastic facilities but until then stay home, stay safe, and stay connected.”
