Work is well underway on a project in Southern Gracemere to provide more properties in the Elizabeth Street area with access to Rockhampton’s Water Supply Network.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said that it gives Council and Fitzroy River Water (FRW) great pleasure to deliver such a positive project.

“I am so pleased to say we have made some people very happy in Southern Gracemere,” said Mayor Strelow.

“I’ve even heard from the FRW Manager, Dr Jason Plumb, that he’s received a few hugs from grateful residents!”

Chair of Council’s Water Committee Councillor Neil Fisher said that these works are an example of Council listening to residents.

“This project was launched in response to significant interest that people in this area have shown in connecting to Rockhampton’s Water Supply Network,” said Cr Fisher.

“Residents have historically used rainwater and groundwater to meet their water supply needs, however, connecting to the network will mean they have access to reliable water all year-round.”

The project cost is $300,000 and is fully funded by Council. Works are being delivered efficiently and cost-effectively by FRW, and are expected to be complete at the end of May.

Divisional Councillor Ellen Smith said these works are going to have a positive impact on residents’ day to day lives.

“Nine households have already connected to the water main, and there’s a possibility that 32 more households will be connected,” said Cr Smith.

“I expect there’ll be a lot of smiles in the Elizabeth Street area by the time this project is finished!”
